Cross-cultural Studies > Methods and participants

To achieve our aims, we created a database of matched sets of exemplary research articles published in textually comparable English and Spanish-medium journals across the selected knowledge areas, which include life sciences, healthcare sciences, agricultural sciences, chemistry, social sciences (such as psychology, sociology, pedagogy and economics) and history. Each article was annotated with relevant variables and every meaningful text segment was labelled according to its communicative function, down to the specific level (e.g. a rhetorical step).

Building this database presented several challenges prompting us to introduce various innovations into the methodologies traditionally employed in cross-cultural and corpus studies. These innovations span corpora compilation, rhetorical structure analysis, and the integration of corpus linguistics with language teaching.
