Intercultural studies

Phase 3 of the ENEIDA Project focuses on intercultural studies of English for Research Publication Purposes (ERPP). While cross-cultural studies explore similarities and differences in academic writing across cultures, the intercultural approach in this phase specifically examines the interactions between the corresponding author of a research article (RA) manuscript and various participants from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds involved in the publication process. These participants, or brokers, play crucial roles in determining whether a manuscript is accepted or rejected, as their expectations about what to say about a given study and how to articulate it—in terms of structure, argumentation, coherence, clarity of expression, the relationship between ideas, style, and appropriate language use—may differ based on cultural norms. This phase investigates whether these differing expectations, and the subsequent need for revisions, pose significant challenges for Spanish researchers seeking to publish in English-medium journals.
